INSIDE OUT RICHMOND

I founded the non profit project Inside Out in 2018. The project turned autobiographical phrases submitted by Richmond residents into large scale projection art on the walls of Richmond City Hall, in partnership with the city of Richmond.

Why project on a large brick wall? In a time when the word “wall” was being used to divide us, this project sought to use a government wall to unite us, by unapologetically illuminating the voices of diverse Americans in one of the most racially diverse cities in the U.S.

During the submission period, over 1,000 Bay Area residents participated in the project, breaking a record for public art participation in the Bay Area.

During its exhibition, the project was censored by the City of Richmond for including statements by local families that critiqued that criticized U.S. immigration policy.

The project team - with support from the National Coalition Against Censorship and a committed group of community allies, successfully beamed guerrilla protest art as a response.

This project was created in partnership with NIAD, Ryse Youth Center, Richmond Art Center, Richmond Streets.
